Calibration
The adjustment, as necessary, of a measuring device such that it responds within the required range and accuracy to known values of input.
Comparison and adjustment of instruments, prior to use, to known basic reference points often traceable to the National Bureau of Standards. When calibrating instruments, often one of the reference points is "zero", thereby providing the means to establish the gain (slope) and the offset (y-intercept).
